Russ Manney - Head Coach

When I think of this senior class, I am impressed with their commitment to what we need to do to improve the program at Wellsboro. The core group of seniors that started the season with us was still here at the end. The continued working to improve; they never stopped working in the weight room, on the practice field, nor did they miss meetings that we scheduled on short notices. They impressed me in July when our three-day mini camp brought in all of them with only a week or two notice. You saw commitment on their faces when asked to accomplish things that they might not have thought possible, but gave us 100% effort because we told them they could do it. The group of young men laid the foundation for the future. I will always remember them as a group made up of great athletes, average athletes, and beginners that worked together to become a team; the stronger ones supporting the weaker, the experienced ones encouraging the less experienced. Most of all they committed themselves to do their best to achieve the goals set by the coaching staff.

Senior Football Players

Marcelo Alvarez - K

Marcelo Alvarez

It is always a pleasure to develop a friendship with someone from another country, especially when that person has a mutual interest in athletics. Marcelo has been a special interest to me because his older brother was a friend of my son and played on the '95 team. Marcelo probably did not have as much playing time as we had two exchange students this year, but I would hope that he enjoyed his experiences and learned a lot about the game of football during his time with us. I wish him the best of luck in the future and hope that the remainder of his stay will continue to be a great learning experience.

Derek Harsch - FB/LB

Derek Harsch

Talk about your strong, silent types and you are talking about Derek. What an athlete! When I took over this job, I have one plan for success: give the ball to Harsch! Need I say more? Derek's hard work and ability is truly a gift. I do not know of one high school football team in the country that Derek could not play for. He led the team in tackles and assists, scored out as the top defensive player on the "hit chart," never missed a practice or workout, and broke the WHS single-season rushing record in seven games. However, the most remarkable feet he performed, in my opinion, was he stayed the same quiet gentleman that he was at the beginning of his career. This is what one can accomplish IF they are willing to work hard and develop their God given abilities. Thanks, Derek, for the pleasure and experience of coaching you.

Jess Keck - OL/DL

Jess Keck

One thing about Jess, you never had to worry about him talking too much! In my opinion, Jess was more dedicated than most to his love of football. Most players would have hung it up under his circumstances, but he gave it his best shot. I hope his experiences here will be used in the future. Jess is no one to shy away from hard work. Playing football and working evenings takes a toll on everybody, but I hope Jess will now turn his work ethic towards future goals and use his determination learned from the football field to accomplish his future plans. It has been a pleasure coaching and knowing him, and I wish him well.

Carlos Lopez - K

Carlos Lopez

Carlos came to us with very little knowledge about our game of football, but he worked very hard to develop his skills, not only as a kicker but also as a punter. Being one of several foreign exchange students that I have had the pleasure to coach over my 29-year career, it was great to have two exchange students that could talk to each other in Spanish. If one did not understand exactly what I was asking them to do, the other could explain. Carlos, too, probably did not participate as much as he would have liked, due to the sharing of time with Marcelo, but I would hope that his experience was a positive one. I wish him the best of luck and hope that the remainder of his stay will be an enjoyable one.

Dan Mattison - OL/DL

Dan Mattison

Dan always had a smile on his face, but he also had a side of him that gave him a bad attitude. I say this in a good way, because a bad attitude is something we needed more of, at times, on the playing field. His willingness to move to other positions, be used as a starter and a backup in certain situations, showed his willingness to sacrifice anything to help the team win. His consistency at long snapping gave us a solid punting and kicking game. I believe he played every position on the line, except guard, and always us his best. Thanks, Dan, for all the hard work.

Tyler Mead - RB/DB

Tyler Mead

Tyler is the perfect example of why you are never too small to play high school football. He did an outstanding job of breaking into the starting lineup during his first and only year of football. Can you imagine just how good he could have been if he played six years? Those on the team that are smaller and those in our school that are considered "undersized" for football should all look up to Tyler as an example of what can be accomplished if you have the heart. He typifies the old cliche, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog." Tyler, best of luck in the future and it was a pleasure coaching you.

Matt Rice - OL/DL

Matt Rice

What can I say about Matt? He says, "Sorry" too much! Always smiling, polite and most of the time in a good mood. Not at all like the stereotypical football player, BUT play he can. Matt was one of our leaders on the line; his size and quickness, combined with his determination and enthusiasm helped him to be one of our best linemen. He did an outstanding job of trapping and with a little "encouragement" from the coaches developed into a good defensive end. Matt will be missed next year and it was a pleasure coaching him.

Brad Smith - RB/LB

Brad Smith

Here is a guy that proves, "If you want to do something bad enough, nothing will stand in your way." While most of us are sleeping in, Brad is up doing chores. When most of us head home for dinner and time to relax, Brad is in the barn, finishing up for the day. All this and he has never missed a practice or camp session! When you mention hard workers, you think of Brad. This determination, dedication, and work ethic all contributed to his being an overachiever on the game field. These same qualities will make Brad a success at whatever endeavor or challenge he faces in the future.

Seth Weaver - OL/DL

Seth Weaver

Seth always had the ability to do everything with enthusiasm. His ability on the field was only hampered by the fact that this was only his second year of football. He never missed an early morning workout, in fact, he had us change it to an earlier time, and his dedication to making himself better showed in each practice session. I look forward to watching him wrestle this season and it has been a pleasure coaching him during his senior year.
