Wellsboro wins opener, beats Renovo in the mud 6-0.
It was a grand and glorious occasion for the green and white of Wellsboro-Charleston High School as they powered over visiting Renovo 6-0 Saturday afternoon on a rain soaked football field. It was the first football encounter in 25 years for the local team.
Wellsboro was never in any real danger of being scored upon and instead, as might have been expected with an inexperienced team, were just the reverse. They were camped in Renovo territory all afternoon. Whenever Renovo started anything that looked like a sustained march, Wellsboro defense stiffened and Renovo would find itself in a punting situation.
It was on a punt try by Renovo's Hess that John Deibert charged through Renovo's defense to block the attempt, then with just seven seconds remaining in the game, fullback Eugene Root ran around left end and into the end zone for the first touchdown for Wellsboro and what turned out to be the only one in the rain-spattered game. Dick Patterson's attempt for the extra point was wide of the mark.
Fumbles stopped three Wellsboro drives and Renovo defenses stiffened several limes, with the Hornets deep in Cherry and White territory, to take over the football as Wellsboro ran out of downs, otherwise the score would have certainly been much more lopsided than the one touchdown Wellsboro did score.
Wellsboro's complete domination of the game was evident in the fact that they only punted once the whole alternoon. There were no statistics kept on the game but the grandstand quarterbacks figured Wellsboro gained four yards to each one of Renovo.
It was a team victory and greatline play, the backs running hard, and fine ball handling that made the difference. Wellsboro looked like champs and hats off to Head Coach Bill Johnson and John Deibert, hard work paid off. Wellsboro's next game will be against Troy on October 11 at Wellsboro.
