Wellsboro wins third in a row, defeats Coudersport 18-13 Saturday.
Welsboro's scrappy never-say-die gridiron lads came from behind to win victory number three in outstanding fashion Saturday afternoon as they edged past visiting Coudersport by a slim score of 18-13.
It was a thriller all the way and for the thousand or so fans on hand, it contained all the excitement one could wish for in a football game. Paul Yannie of Coudersport took the. opening kickoff from the Hornets and ran 90 yards down the sideline for a touchdown and Jack Halloran's pass to end Joe Snyder was good. So with only 18 seconds gone in the football game Coudersport owned a 7-0 lead and it looked like a long day was on hand for the local boys.
But Bill Johnson's green-clad Hornets proved they had the stuff that makes champions. After an exchange of punts, Wellsboro's Gary Peake intercepted a Halloran pass and ran it back to the Coudersport 20. Quimby then had his pass intercepted on the 10 yard line and once again Coudersport took over. But after two plays by the Coudersport lads, they had lost important yardage back to the 5 yard line.
Wellsboro got a break on a pitchback from Quarterback Halloran to Halfback Orlando Castano, Castano fumbled and Ed Patt fell on the loose pigskin in the end zone for the first touchdown for the home club. The extra point was blocked and the score stood Coudy 7 and Wellsboro 6.
Coudersport added to their lead, after making a sustained drive, Dave Setzer plunged over from the one. The extra point was no good and the score stood 13-6 in favor of Coudersport.
Wellsboro scored just before the half as. Wellsboro ground out yardage on the ground and in the air. Paced with nice running by Jim R. Callahan, Eugene Root, Bill Suhr and keeper plays by Roger Quimby. Quimby finally scored on a quarterback sneak. The extra point attempt by Bob McConnell was wide. The first half ended with Coudersport holding a slim lead 13 - 12.
Wellsboro started a drive after receiving the second half kickoff but were held on downs on the Coudersport 22. Coudersport drove downfield but Jack Halloran fumbled on the Wellsboro 40 and John Deibert recovered for the Hornets. On running plays the Wellsboro eleven went to the Coudersport 40
Quimby then threw a pass complete to Deibert who went to the 25. Bill Suhr, Jim Callahan, Eugene Root and Quimby carried to the 8 on running plays. On an end sweep Root was hit hard and fumbled. A scramble for the ball between Hartley Cloos of Wellsboro and Jim Marzo of Coudersport was won by Cloos and Wellsboro still had life on the 20. Quimby then threw the winning touchdown pass from the 20 to Ed Patt all alone in the end zone and that was the ball game.
The extra point was missed, but Wellsboro had what proved to be the winning margin as Roger Quimby squashed any further hopes of Coudersport fans when he intercepted a Coudy pass and ran it k,back from his own 40 to the Purple and white 30 late in the game. The contest ended with Wellsboro knocking on the gate again on the Coudersport 5-yard line.
