Wellsboro romps to 31-0 win over Lakemont Academy for fourth in a row.
Wellsboro's surprising Green Hornets football team became the only unbeaten team in the surrounding area as they rolled to a 31-0 victory over Lakemont Academy on the New Yorkers home ground Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets scored in every period. They got their first score after John Deibert rushed through the Lakemont defense to block an attempted punt. Wellsboro took over the pigskin on the 35-yard line in Lakemont territory.
Three plays later Wellsboro found itself with still 10 yards for a first down and 35 to go for a touchdown. Bill Suhr took a handoff from Roger Quimby on the fourth down play, and went through a hole big enough to drive a truck through. The little halfback was pulled down on the 15-yard line. Jim R. Callahan then went to the two-yard line where he was pushed out of bounds. Eugene Root then plunged over for the score and Wellsboro led 6-0. Bob McConnell's extra point try was blocked.
Wellsboro scored its second touchdown as Jim R. Cailahan, with some nice open field running and some beautiful blocking by the Hornets, scooted 30 yards for the touchdown as the first quarter ended. The extra point try failed.
Wellsboro took a 19-0 lead just before halftime when Roger Quimby intercepted a Don Meister pass and again with the Wellsboro club throwing key blocks, ran down the sideline 40 yards for the score. Wellsboro then chalked up their first extra point of the year as Bob McConnell faked a kick and threw a pass to John Deibert in the end zone.
Lakemont kicked to Wellsboro to open the second half of play, and Bill Suhr ran from the Wellsboro 40-yard line through another huge hole in the Lakemont line on the first play of scrimmage, cut to the sideline and outran the Lakemont defenders for a 60-yard scoring run. Again the extra point attempt failed and Wellsboro took a 25-0 lead.
With Wellsboro's second team seeing action for most of the second half, Wellsboro scored in the final period as Fred Reynolds took a handoff from Mike Burns, and with nice blocking, scored from 30 yards out. McConnell's try for the extra point was no good.
The Wellsboro team will now face two stern tests as they travel to Towanda Friday night then return home November 8 for the final game of the season against Canton.
