Hornet squeak past Trojans, 12-7.

By: Wellsboro Gazette | October 16, 1958

It was a cold afternoon but the action on the gridiron was red hot as Wellsboro's Green Hornets squeaked by by the Trojans from Troy by a 12-7 margin at Wellsboro Charleston High School Field last Saturday.

Wellsboro took a 6-0 lead just before halftime when Troy gambled on fourth down. They needed two yards for a first down and Wrisley, the fine running back for Troy, faked the kick and tried to run the ball around his own right side of the line where big John Deibert, met him and with a nice tackle, spilled the Troy runner on the Troy 20-yard line.

With four minutes to go in the half, Wellsboro took over on the fourth down failure of the white clad Trojans and on the first play from scrimmage, Bill Suhr, on a double reverse, went all the way to the Troy one-yard line. One the next play Roger Quimby scored the touchdown on a quarterback sneak. Bob McConnell's try for the extra point was a shade wide and the local boys had a 6-0 halftime lead.

Wellsboro received the kick from Troy to start the second half and proceeded to start a drive which resulted in the Hornets second and final touchdown of the afternoon. Quarterback Roger Quimby threw a pass to John Deibert who caught it beautifully down the middle between two Troy defenders and took it to the Troy 33-yard line.

On the next play, Quimby threw another strike, this time to Bill Suhr who gathered the ball in and went to the Troy five-yard line. The next play lost three yards back to the eight-yard line as the Trojan defense stiffened. Quimby then shot a pass down the middle and Deibert hauled it in lor the score. The extra point attempt failed and the score stood at 12-0 Wellsboro, with only 3 minutes gone in the second half.

Troy came right back with a score as Troy's Wrisley found his halfback Gary Ritz in the open and threw a 21-yard scoring pass to him. Wrisely ran for the extra point and the score stood at 12-7 Wellsboro.

The climatic moment came with a minute and a half remaining in the game. Wellsboro missed a first down by inches on the Troy 33-yard line. Troy took over on downs and aided by a 15-yard pass interference penalty proceeded towards the Wellsboro goal. A long pass was good to the Wellsboro 25-yard line and then with a fourth down and 10 situation, Wrisley found his end Kennedy in the open and he caught the pass before he was forced out of bounds on the Hornets 10-yard line.

The Trojans tried two running plays but the clock ran out of time for the visitors and Wellsboro had its second victory in as many tries to the delight of about 1,000 local fans.
