Green Hornets close 1959 season with 26-0 win over Canton.

By: Wellsboro Gazette | November 12, 1959

The Wellsboro-Charleston Green Hornets closed another successful football season by defeating Canton High on their field, 26-0.

This win was the Hornets' seventh in eight starts and twelve our of fourteen over the last two years. The Hornets rolled up 160 points against their eight opponents and only 46 were scored on them. Four teams managed to score on the Hornets and only one team in the last five games, that being Towanda.

The Hornets scored against Canton before the game was two minutes old as Fred Reynolds recovered a Canton fumble on the kickoff on the Canton 33-yard line.

After two running plays, Pete Losinger broke loose for a 28-yard run to the Canton two. From there, Reynolds plowed over for the score. Keith Tomb's point after touchdown was good and the Hornets led 7-0.

Later in the same quarter, the Hornets started another drive on their own 26-yard line and on nine plays were on the Canton 8-yard line. Mike Burns fumbled and Canton recovered on the 10-yard line.

The Hornets took a Canton punt on their 47-yard line and on eight running plays by Reynolds, Losinger, John Deibert, and Burns the pigskin was the Canton seven. Pete Losigner turned on the speed and scored the second touchdown of the day. The extra point was no good and the Hornets led 13-0 at the half.

Canton just couldn't stop the Hornets' ground attack as the Hornets took over on the 38-yard line after a blocked kick and on eight running plays and 62 yards, Losinger scored from the one-yard line. The extra point was no good.

The Hornets scored their last touchdown in the last quarter when the Canton penalties pushed them back to their five-yard line. They punted to the 35-yard line where Tombs returned it to the Canton 20-yard line. Tim Kerns gained a yard to the 19 and Gordon Seamans then ran the remaining distance for the score.
