Wellsboro wins over Notre Dame.
Wellsboro High School found its ground game stalled but took to the air lanes and scored a 7-0 victory over previously unbeaten Notre Dame High School of Elmira, NY at the local gridiron Saturday afternoon.
Fred Reynolds scored the lone touchdown of the game in the second period from five yards out. Keith Tombs booted the extra point and that was the ball game as far as scoring went.
In Wellsboro's touchdown drive, the Hornets got a break when an offsides penalty against Notre Dame gave the Green a first down on the Notre Dame 47-yard line. Reynolds hit the line for no gain. Tombs then fired a pass to Ken Monks who had gotten behind the Crusader secondary. Monks was pulled down on the 5-yard line. Then Reynolds went right up the middle for the touchdown. The extra point, kicked by Tombs, made it 7-0.
Wellsboro had the breaks but fumbled away the opportunities. Twice the Hornets fumbled within the 20-yard line and when they didn't lose the ball on fumbles, they couldn't dent the spirited Notre Dame line. Wellsboro had a first down on the three-yard line in the fourth quarter and could move only to the one-yard line in four plays.
Wellsboro on the other hand contained the visitors, allowing them to penetrate only as far as the 15-yard stripe. Notre Dame intercepted a Tombs pass on the Wellsboro 47-yard line and returned it to the 37-yard line. Notre Dame went to the 15-yard line and lost the ball on downs.
The game ended with Wellsboro on the Notre Dame five-yard line. John Deibert blocked a punt attempt with 1:12 remaining in the game but the Hornets elected to run out the clock and the game ended 7-0 Wellsboro.
