Wellsboro could go no where on the ground so took to the airways Saturday afternoon as Mike Burns tossed three touchdown passes to lead the Green Hornets to their sixth win of the season and a 19-6 victory over visiting Towanda.

It was the final home game of the season and kept the charges of coach Bill Johnson undefeated at home and brought their record to 13 wins, 1 defeat, and 1 tie in two seasons of football.

The Green and White found Towanda a tough adversary as they could gain a slim 39 yards rushing. However the accuracy of the air game and Mike Burns spelled the difference. Burns threw eight passes and completed six for 89 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Both teams battled to a first quarter scoreless tie with neither team making a serious threat to score.

The second period was a different story as the Hornets crossed the Towanda goal twice for a 12-0 halftime lead. Wellsboro did it the hardway with Towanda punting short to their own 29-yard line. Pete Losinger gained nothing through the line, then Burns fired a pass over the middle to Freeman Smith who, with a great effort, carried two tacklers with him for a first down. Things got tough as a reverse play lost 6 yards, a pass was incomplete, and a sneak gained only a yard. It was 4th down and 15 when Burns threw a perfect pass to John Deibert, who had gotten behind the Towanda defenses, for the touchdown. Keith Tombs' extra point kick was blocked.

Wellsboro kicked off to the Black Knights and held them at the 32-yard line where the visitors were forced to punt. Hartley Cloos blocked the punt and Wellsboro had possession on the Towanda 24-yard line. Deibert ran for seven yards and Losinger eight. Then Burns threw a looping pass to Losinger who fell backwards into the end zone for the score. Again the extra point attempt was blocked. The half ended Wellsboro 12, Towanda 0.

Wellsboro got a break after the intermission as Towanda fumbled the kickoff and Wellsboro recovered on the Towanda 25-yard line. Two rushes into the stout Towanda line failed but a pass to Smith had the first down on the 15-yard line. Losinger lost 2 yards and Deibert passed incomplete. Burns then passed 17 yards to Keith Tombs in the end zone for the score. Tombs' kick split the uprights and Wellsboro led 19-0.

Towanda ended the scoring with a 51 yard scoring march in 9 plays. Van Derlyke plunged over for the touchdown from the three-yard line on fourth down. The extra point try was wide and it was Wellsboro 19, Towanda 6.

The contest ended with Wellsboro on the Towanda 10-yard line after Freeman Smith gathered in a Burns pass and was pulled down from behind as the game ended.

Wellsboro closes out the 1559 football season Saturday at Canton.
