Wellsboro Green Hornets win squeaker Saturday by beating Coudersport 18-13.

By: Wellsboro Gazette | September 15, 1960

Welisboro-Charleston High School opened its 1960 football campaign on a winning note with a comeback last second touchdown to edge visiting Coudersport 18-13 and make the debut of head coach Jim Talerico a successful one.

It was Mike Burns and Bub Smith teaming to break the Coudersport defenses. With less than a minute remaining in the game and the Hornets trailing 13-12, Burns threw a 40 yard pass which Smith hauled in on the Coudersport 21-yard line. A Burns pass fell incomplete as it hit the goal post in the end zone. Then with all the pass protection needed to give his pass receivers time to break clear, Burns fired a perfect strike to Smith for the winning score with 35 seconds remaining in the game. Burns intercepted a Coudy pass in the remaining seconds to thwart any effort by the visitors to pull the game out.

Wellsboro drew first blood in the second quarter when Burns threw a 40 yard pass which Smith made a great catch of on the Coudersport 25-yard line. Tim Kerns then ran through the Coudy defenses to the one-yard line where Burns sneaked it over for the touchdown. The extra point was blocked and Welisboro led 6-0.

Coudersport came roaring back and scored on an 80 yard march in seven plays and took the lead 6-0 when Dave Setzer scored and a pass from Tom Shear to Dick Buchannan made it 7-6 at halftime.

The third quarter was all even as each team scored once. Welisboro scoring from five yards out on an end run by Burns. Coudersport took the lead again and both teams failed on their extra point trys. The score at the end of three quarters stood Coudersport 13, Wellsboro 12.

Then the stage was set for the dramatic finish by Welisboro to pull the game out of the fire and send the large crowd home happy.
