Wellsboro topples Notre Dame 13-6.
Before more than 1,200 fans in Elmira, Wellsboro High strutted its stuff and powered to a 13-6 victory over Notre Dame High School of Elmira.
The Hornets played heads up football and but for costly penalties, the score would have been higher.
Tim Kerus, Gordy Seamans, and Mike Burns had a great night piercing the Notre Dame defenses and the Wellsboro line play was as good as you'll ever see. The alert Hornet defense recovered two Notre Dame fumbles and intercepted a pass to highlight the win.
Wellsboro did all its scoring in the first two quarters. With 1:20 left in the first quarter Wellsboro had marched 46 yards in 6 plays as Gordy Seamans went over from six yards out. Bob Morrow's placement had it 7-0.
It then took 73 yards and 11 plays in the second quarter to score with Tim Kerns running across for the touchdown. The extra point kick was no good and it was 13-0 at the half.
Notre Dame made it close when Tom Salmon scored on a real nice 42 yard run through the Hornet defenses. Several times it appeared he was caught but he managed to shake free and outrun the final Hornet defenders for the score. After the running attempt failed for the point after, it was 13-6, and that's the way it ended.
Wellsboro dominated the statistics department marking up 13 first downs to Notre Dame's 5 and 258 yards gained to 135 for Notre Dame. It was victory number three for coach Jim Telerico. There is a week's layoff for the Hornets and the next game will be at the local field against a real strong Troy eleven on October 8th.
