Hornets end season with victory over Canton, 20-0.

By: Wellsboro Gazette | November 8, 1962

The Wellsboro Green Hornets ended their football season with a 20-0 win over Canton on the home gridiron. The contest was played in the snow on a cold day as the weather played a big factor in the outcome.

The Hornets scored the first points of the game once they got the pigskin on a 45 yard drive that took 15 plays and eight minutes of the first quarter. Bob Scranton plunged over from three yards out for the score after a Tombs to Bush pass brought the ball to that point. The placement of the kick was no good.

The Hornets scored their second thouchdown soon after when Ivan Kerr blocked a Canton punt and fell on the ball in the end zone. Morral's one point kick was good and the Hornets led13-0 with two minutes left in the quarter.

In the second quarter, Canton couldn't muster any kind of a drive and the Hornets scored their third touchdown. With the period about over, Bill Leonard took a hand off from quarterback Dale Tombs and ran around the right end for eight yards and the score. The point after was good when Dale Tombs passed to Terry Smith.

The second half was scoreless but the Canton squad threatened twice against the Hornet replacements. Canton took the third quarter kickoff and in 13 plays drove the ball to the Hornets' three-yard line where they had to give the ball up on downs.

The Wellsboro substitutes couldn't move the pigskin against the Canton starters but managed to hold the squad from scoring. Canton's last drive came late in the last period with the game ending with Canton on the Hornet two-yard line.

The playing field was covered with snow and a wet snow fell throughout the contest. The cold day accounted for 14 fumbles during the game and also held the crowd down to a season low.

Canton was held to 14 yards rushing during the first half by the Hornet defense and the Canton squad couldn't register a first down during that time. They did run up eight first downs in the second half against the subs, but were held to only 23 yards rushing in the contest.

The game ended the Hornets' season with a 5-3 record, winning games from Coudersport, Renovo, North Penn, Troy, and Canton. The Hornets lost to Port Allegany, Bath, and Towanda.
