Hornets lose to Towanda, 21-7.

By: Wellsboro Gazette | November 1, 1962

Towanda handed the Wellsboro Hornets their second straight loss Saturday night, under the lights at Towanda, 21-7. The victory was Towanda's fifth in eight starts and was the Hornets' third loss against four wins.

Towanda scored two points in the first quarter on a safety when Bob Scranton was tackled in the end zone on an attempted punt. Towanda scored again in the second period to lead at halftime 8-0, when Tom Palumbo ended a Towanda drive by crashing over from the two-yard line.

There was no scoring in the third period, but early in the final quarter Nick Prusack scored from two yards out to send Towanda out in front 14-0. Late in the same period, Gary Thomas broke away on an off-tackle shot and scampered 40 yards to paydirt. Lee Sullivan booted the extra point.

Wellsboro's only score came in the late quarter when a Dale Tombs aerial to Bob Scranton covered 18 yards for the score. Gary Morral kicked the conversion.

The only bright spot for the Hornets was the quarterbacking of Dale Tombs and the running of halfback Bob Scranton. Tombs completed 13 of 19 passes good for 152 yards, one for a touchdown. Scranton caught six of those passes, scored the teams only touchdown and gained most of the Hornets yardage on the ground.

The Hornets will close out their season Saturday with a home game with Canton. Canton defeated the Hornets last year, 14-0, scoring all their points in the last quarter. The Hornets will be out to make their last game of the season a victory, and all fans can lend their support by filling the bleachers. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
