Canton ends Hornet streak at 8.

By: Wellsboro Gazette | November 7, 1963

The Canton Warriors did what eight other teams couldn't do by defeating the Green Hornets on their home field 32-13.

The Warriors cut off the Hornets win streak at eight, and by doing so, walked off with the Northern Tier League title. The Hornets finished the season with a 4-1 league record and an 8-1 overall. Canton was 4-0-1 in league play, but lost to Sayre and Athens in their nine game schedule. They were held to a scoreless tie by Wyalusing.

Canton's running attack was just too much for the Hornets with the speedy Warriors rushing for 343 yards, with Joe May picking up 201. The clubs played to a scoreless first quarter but broke into the touchdown column in the second when both squads scored 13 points.

Canton scored first after runs by Deitrick and Porter placed the ball Ion the four. Porter plunged over for the touchdown.

The Hornets scored on the next series of plays with Bob Scranton plunging over from the one foot line, tying the score at 6-6.

The Warriors look a short lead a minute later when halfback Jerry Derr legged his way 34 yards, for the touchdown. Porter fan for the extra point and Canton held a 13-6 lead.

The Wellsboro crew took the kickoff and drove down field, where Denny Rumsey ran the end to cap the drive for the touchdown. Zuchowski passed to Christman for the extra point and it was 13-13 at halftime.

With both of the teams playing even in the first half, there was no holding the Canton squad in the last half. Soon after the third period opened, Porter tossed the ball to Joe May just as he was being tackled and May scampered 74 yds for the touchdown.

There was no holding the Warrior halfback as he ran for two more touchdowns in the last quarter. May took a handoff from quarterback Jerry Bailey and steamed 17 yards around left end for the score. He also ran for the extra point.

With about five minutes left in the contes,t Joe still had some pep left, grabbed the ball from Bailey and again ran through the right side of the line and rolled 65 yards for the score and an easy 32-13 victory.

The Canton Warriors came out in the second half with a completely different offense and although it wasn't one of the Hornets best played games, it just couldn't stop the long scampers of Joe May that sent the game into a rout.

The Hornets entered the game without the services of quarterback Dale Tombs, which could have made a difference, but Canton fielded a great team and the Hornets were out-played and this, victory just can't be taken away from them.
