Hornets overwhelm Blossburg.
The Wellsboro Green Hornets scored two quick touchdowns and then coasted to a 27-0 victory over the North Penn Panthers for its fourth straight win.
The Hornets added a touchdown in the second and third quarters as coach Norman Antoine played the reserves most of the third and last periods.
The Panthers found their work much easier stealing over to the enemy grounds under the cover of darkness trying to harass the local squad than it was to meet the Hornets on the gridiron. Call it revenge if you wish, but the Hornets ran up 246 yards on the ground to the Panthers' 18.
The Hornets opened the scoring when George Bodine fell on the opening kickoff on the Hornets 49-yard line. Jim Clark ran it for 10 yards to the Panther 41-yard line, Dale Tombs hit the line twice for nine yards, and Bill Leonard lugged it 27 yards to the five-yard line. Clark gained three more yards, then Leonard hit the line for the score. Morral's kick was no good.
After North Penn took the kickoff, they were penalized 15 yards on the first play. The Panthers passed on the next play and Doug Zuchowski intercepted for the Hornets on the North Penn 33-yard line. Runs by Clarke, Rumsey, and Leonard and the pigskin was on the 16-yard line. Quarterback Dale Tombs faked a line plunge and bootlegged the pigskin across the goal line for the Hornets second score before the game was eight minutes old. Morral booted the extra point.
Bill Leonard scored the third Hornet touchdown late in the second period on a one yard plunge, after a Hornets drive of 46 yards netted the score. Runs by Scranton, Leonard, Rumsey, Tombs, and a 12 yard Tombs to Bliss pass ate up the yardage. Morral kicked the extra point. The Hornets led 20-0 at interimission.
The Hornets added another score midway in the third quarter on another 48 yard drive. Runs by Tombs, Clark, Leonard and a 14 yarder by Bob Scranton, set the touchdown up for a one yard plunge by Scranton. Gary Morral booted his third extra point.
Coach Antoine threw in his second unit at this point and the Panthers put on its best drive of the day. Hayes recovered a Hornet fumble on the Panther 46-yard line and two long aerials brought the Panthers to the Hornet eight-yard line.
A Hornet penalty gave the ball to the North Penn squad on the four-yard line, but Tombs recovered a Panther fumble on the 10-yard line and the Hornets were back in business again.
Runs by Zuchowski, Mosier, Comstock, Bailey, and Prevost brought the ball to the North Penn 37-yard line when the game ended. The Hornets were penalized 50 yards in the last eight minutes of play, which halted the Hornets drives.
Statistically it was all the Hornets, they led the total yards, 258 to North Penn's 71. The Hornets ran up 14 first downs to five, and compiled 246 rushing yards to North Penn's 18. The Panthers hit four of 12 passes for 53 yards while Wellsboro hit one of five for 12 yards. Wellsboro was penalized 59 yards to North Penn's 40.
The Hornets will meet Troy Friday night at Troy for its first night game of the season. Kickoff will be at 8:00 p.m.
