Long runs nets Hornets 5th win by beating Troy.

By: Wellsboro Gazette | October 10, 1963

The Wellsboro Green Hornets took advantage of Troy's loose playing in the first quarter, ran up two quick touchdowns, then hung on for two and a half quarters in downing a fast, scrappy Troy eleven 32-12.

The score does not indicate the type of game that was played in the Troy gridiron under the lights, with the Trojans running up 16 first downs and giving the Hornets a real tough battle.

Long runs gave coach Norm Antoine his fifth straight win, the second win in the newly formed Northern Tier League, as the squad looked spotty and completely lost when they lost the services of their quarterback, Dale Tombs, when he was forced to leave the game in the second period with a bad cut on his left hand that required four stitches. Tombs re-entered the game in the last quarter to cut down a late Trojan rally and to pilot the team to two more touchdowns.

The Hornet steam roller started on time and blocked a Troy punt after they took three cracks at the Hornet line. George Bodine knocked down the punt and Roger Dibble picked it up and lugged it 42 yards for the first Hornet score. Morral kicked the extra point.

Soon after Bob Scranton fell on a Trojan fumble in the end zone and the Hornets took over on their own 20-yard line. Rumsey carried the ball for 28 yards to the 48 and Bill Leonard covered the remaining 52 yards for a touchdown. Morral's extra point kick was no good.

Leonard again put on his running shoes and the first play in the second quarter, Bill scampered 60 more yards for the Hornets' third score. Morral's kick again was low, as the Hornets led 19-0 while the game was only 13 minutes old.

Tombs left the game right after that score and the steam roller slowed down.

The Hornets couldn't move the ball and Troy scored its first touchdown when Dick Calkins plunged over from the two-yard line. The extra point attempt was no good and the Hornets led 19-6 at halftime.

Neither team could score in the third period but the Trojans drove down to the Hornet three and on the second play of the fourth period Dick Calkins again drove off from the two-yard line. The kick for the extra point was no good.

The Trojans closed the gap to 19-12 and the Troy squad was out to stop the Hornets streak.

Steam was generated in the old roller again when Tombs entered the game and immediately hit Denny Bliss with two aerials one for 16 yards and the other for 27, and the Hornets were resting on the Trojans 31-yard line. Bill Leonard ran it to the 14-yard line and Tombs bootlegged the remaining 14 yards to pavdirt. Again the kick was missed.

The Hornets ended the night's scoring late in the last quarter when Bob Scranton intercepted a Troy pass on the 20-yard line and returned it to mid-field. After Tombs gained three yards to the Troy 47-yard line.

Tombs hit Scranton with a pass and Bob out-lasted the six men who hit him on the way to the pay-off line, as he brought the large crowd to their feet in the best run of the night. Tombs ran for the extra point to make the final score 32-12.

The Hornets will meet Towanda here on the High School field, this Saturday with kickoff time set at 2:00 p.m. This will be the third league game for the Hornets and they will be out to make it their sixth in a row.
