Hornets dump Wyalusing for number eight in thriller, 13-7.
The Wellsboro Hornets had to beat down a last minute drive by the Wyalusing Rams to win their eighth straight football game in a thriller and a crowd pleaser.
The Hornets' defense wasn't at their best, but they came to life when the going got tough and beat down a couple of Wyalusing drives to keep the slate clean.
The Rams came to town with the idea of handing the Hornets their first season defeat. Wyalusing took the opening kickoff and kept the pigskin for over seven minutes on their 71 yard, 15 play drive opening drive with Tom Taylor lugging the mail most of the way. John Thompson scored first for the Rams as he crashed over from the two-yard line. Taylor ran for the extra point and the Rams were ahead with a short 7-0 lead with 4:38 left in the first quarter.
With Rumsey, Scranton, and Leonard carrying the ball the Hornets had time to work the leather to the Rams' nine-yard line, but had to give the ball up on downs at the end of the period.
The Rams found the going tough in the second quarter with Frank Gerow, the Hornet right tackle, in their backfield the whole day. He broke through the Rams line time and again throwing the Rams quarterback for big losses.
One hurried Gerow rush caused Taylor's pass to be intercepted by Hornet linebacker Lynn Halstead, who returned the ball to the Rams 25-yard line setting up the first Hornet touchdown.
After one shot at the line by Rumsey, Bill Leonard took a reverse to the Rams three-yard line. Leonard hit the line to the one-yard line and from there, Bob Scranton plunged for the score. Gary Morral booted thee point after and the score was tied 7-7 at intermission.
The Hornets winning touchdown came late in the third period when a Prevost pass hit Leonard on the Rams 48-yard line. On the next play Leonard went wide around the right end and out-dashed the field for the score. Morral's kick went wide.
The Rams took over the ball to start the last quarter on their own 43-yard line and in 10 plays drove down to the Hornets 20-yard line in a drive that Wellsboro couldn't halt. Two bad snaps from center pushed the Rams back to the 37-yard line. They recovered back to the 23-yard line, but the Hornets took over on downs.
Prevost moved the squad to the 44-yard line but the Hornets were forced to punt to the Rams 20-yard line. Wyalusing again started a drive with three minutes left in the game, and in six plays were on the Hornet 38-yard line with 31 seconds left in the game.
Taylor tossed a pass out to the flat and again, Lynn Halstead leapt into the air to snag the ball just before it hit the ground to save th day and the game for Wellsboro. Time ran out before another play could be started.
The Hornets will travel to Canton this Saturday for the last game of the season with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
