Hornets run over Renovo, 21-12.
Coach Norm Antoine's Green Hornets ran past the Renovo Railroaders 21-12 for the season's first win, as the squad dashed for 16 first downs and 224 yards rushing. The Hornets speedy backfield scored three touchdowns, missed on two mpre within the eight yard line and out ran the Railroaders all day.
Quarterback Bob Scranton paced the Hornet attack and crossed the goal line before the game was three minutes old on a seven yard run only to have the touchdown nullified by an offsides penalty.
But the Hornets struck for, two quick touchdowns early in the second period with
Bob Scranton scoring both of them. The first coining on a three yard run, that being set up by two Scranton to Rumsey passes and the other on a 19 yard scamper, and that coming on the tail of a recovered fumble by lineman Blaine Bush on the Renovo 23-yard line.
Neither team could score in the third period but the Railroaders, operating out of the shotgun formation, hit on three long passes early in the period, until Jim Youdas intercepted the ball on the five-yard line.
From that point, with the line opening big holes and runs by Prevost, Rumsey, and Kerr with Scranton hitting Lynn Halstead with aerials, the Hornets set up the early fourth quarter score when Lou Prevost plunged over from the three-yard line. Scranton's kick was good and the Hornets had a 21-6 lead.
The Railroaders desperate now, went to the shotgun and the passing arm of Dan O'Connor, who hit two of three passes, the last one covering 70 yards and a touchdown to end Ken Fleming. O'Connors kick was wide.
With about three minutes left in the contest the Hornets took Renovo's on-sides kickoff on the 48-yard line and with the Hornets third unit in the game with John Wilcox as quarterback, the squad, with the help of a 15 yard penalty, and runs by Peterson, Kennedy, and Wilcox worked the pigskin to the Renovo eight-yard line. There the Railroaders intercepted a Hornet pass on the five as the game ended.
The Hornet defense held the Renovo squad to seven yards on the ground during the first half, but gave up 100 yards in the air. During that period the Hornets had 107 yards in the ground and 30 in the air. For the whole contest the Railroaders was held to only 33 yards rushing, but they managed 206 in the air. The Hornets in their running game rushed for 224 yards and added 56 thru the air for a total of 280 yards.
