Hornets topple Canton in last period.
Coach Norm Antoine's football squad came up with three quick last period touchdowns to overcome a Canton Warriors seven point lead, to finish the season with a 3 2 Noithern Tier League record and a 4-4 overall.
The Hornets made all of their 145 yards gained on the ground in the last six minutes of the game, after being held to minus eight yards during the first three and a half quarters. Most of this yardage was lost when unprotected Lou Prevost dropped back to pass. Prevost did hit on 4 of 8 aerials in the second half, one for 49 yards that set up the first Hornet toucdown.
After playing a scoreless first half which saw two Canton fumbles hurt the squads drives, one being recovered by Jim Youdas on the 29-yard line in the first period and the other by Gary Wilson in the second period on the 33-yard line. It was in the third quarter with only 15 seconds left that Canton scored its touchdown for a short lead.
The Warriors drove 57 yards in 16 plays with Larry Porter scoring from seven yards out. Porter also plunged for the extra point.
The local fans had to wait until the middle of the game. The Hornets started a 70 yard drive with its passing attack accounting for most of the yardage.
Quarterback Lou Prevost tossed one to left end Jim Youdas for 11 yards and hit on a short one to Tom Peterson that carried to the 42-yard line. After one incompletion, Lou pitched another pass to Youdas which covered 49 yards and put the Hornets on the Warriors nine-yard line. On the next play, Prevost looped one to right end Larry Milhollen in the end zone. Prevost ran for the extra point after faking a boot.
The Hornets scored again the next time it got the pigskin. They took a Canton punt on the 43-yard line and on the first play from scrimmage Lynn Halstead tossed a lateral to Prevost who lugged the leather 57 yards to paydirt. Prevost passed to Youdas for the point after to go ahead 14-7.
The Warriors fought back on the kickoff, taking the ball on the 28-yard line and returning it to the 48-yard line. McNett hit with a pass to Jim Looney who carried 42 yards to the Hornet 10-yard line. On the next play, Larry Porter drove the 10 yards to the goal line but fumbled, and Charley Colony jumped on it in the end zone. The Hornets took the ball on the 20-yard line and worked it to the 43-yard line.
With 1:46 left, Ivan Kerr broke through the line and appeared to be hemmed in by three Warrior tacklers but he emerged with a burst of speed, gave a "crowbar" stiff-arm to two more Canton tacklers, and dashed the 57 yards for the score. The pass for the extra point missed.
The game ended with Larry Milhollen intercepting a Canton pass on the 38-yard line for a 20-7 Hornet win.
