Hornets miscues gives Coudersport 20-13 win.
Two Wellsboro fumbles and an intercepted pass gave Coudersport three first half touchdown in the season opener for both schools in a game played at Wellsboro. The Hornet errors were enough to give Coudersport a 20-13 win.
The Hornets, coached by Norm Antoine, dominated the game throughout, ran up 18 first downs to Coudersport's 4, ran up a total of 355 yards to the visitor's 97, but just couldn't cross the goal line for three periods.
Five fumbles hurt the Hornets badly on long drives and the Falcons turned two of them into touchdowns before the first quarter was half over.
The Hornets kicked off to start the contest and after three plays the Falcons punted to the Hornet 28-yard line where the ball was fumbled and Coudersport recovered on the 26-yard line. On the first play, Toots Staiger dashed off tackle for the score. Quarterback Mark Griffin booted the extra point.
The Hornets bounded right back and on nine plays covered 78 yards to bring the pigskin to the Falcons two-yard line. Quarterback Bob Scranton juggled the pass from center and Falcon end Gary Hempill picked it out of the air and legged the ball 98 yards to paydirt. Again Griffen's boot was good.
Wellsboro took the kickoff on the 15-yard line and Denny Rumsey returned the ball to the 32-yard line. In two running plays by Rumsey and Ivan Kerr the Hornets were on the Falcon 13-yard line. On the next play the Hornets fumbled and Coudersport recovered. Midway in the second quarter, Dick Russell intercepted a Scranton pass and ran 79 yards for the Falcons last score.
Coudersport led 20-0 at intermission.
The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the last period when they racked up two touchdowns, but time ran out before they could get the third.
In nine plays with runs by Lou Prevost, Bob Scranton, Denny Rumsey, and Ivan Kerr covering 61 yards, the ball was on the Coudersport 16-yard line. Lou Prevost then shot off tackle, side-stepped two would be tacklers and scampered the 16 yards for the store Scranton ran the end for the extra point.
The Falcons took the kickoff and after running for a first down, fumbled and Ed McMullen recovered for the Hornets on the Coudy 28-yard line. After Scranton and Prevost ran it to the eight-yard line, Scranton hit Rumsey with an aerial for the score. The extra point was no good.
Coudersport ran out the 1:20 left on the clock for a 20-13 win.
