Wellsboro's Green Hornets, after spotting the North Penn Panthers seven points, fought back in a whirl-wind finish to score three touchdowns in the last quarter to win its first Northern Tier League game 19-7.

The Panthers out battled the Hornets in the scoreless first half, with costly penalties hurting the squads offense on key drives. The Hornets changed things around in the second half with the offense moving the ball and the defense holding the Panthers without a second half first down and at the same time, holding them without a yard rushing.

The fighting Panthers drew first blood in the third period when Mike Joseph intercepted a Hornet pass on the Hornet 30-yard line. Quarterback Tom Weller then hit end Ted Tokarz with an aeral that went the 30 yards for the score. Lee Manikowski booted the extra point for a 7-0 North Penn lead.

The Hornets scored on the second play in the last quarter when Lou Prevost handed off to Denny Rumsey at the line and Rumsey dashed through tackle 27 yarrds for the touchdown. The kick for the extra point was no good.

Shortly after, Scranton recovered a Panther fumble on the North Penn 24-yard line and in four plays Ivan Kerr plunged over from the three for the score. Scranton hit end Jim Youdas in the end zone for the extra point, and the Hornets took a 13-7 lead.

With about five minutes left, the Hornets struck for their last score. Halfback Lou Prevost scooped up a blocked punt and ran it 47 yards for the touchdown. The run for the extra point failed.

The Hornets rushing game ran up 189 yards to the Panthers 38 and came out with 220 total yards to the Panthers 93.

This Saturday, the home squad will meet Troy on the home field with game time at 2:00 p.m. This will be the Hornets second league game. Plan to be there.
