Hornets snatch big win as Prevost shines at Towanda.
Lou Prevost, converted to quarterback from fullback, put on a great aerial show at Towanda Saturday night to pilot the Green Hornets over a hard fighting Towanda eleven, 20-13, in a thriller.
Prevost hit 12 of 19 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns, the last one coming with 17 seconds left after he engineered an 80 yard drive with only two minutes remaining.
This victory was the best team effort so far this season. At times the line played spotty but when the effort was needed the squad rose to the task, especially the last three and a half minutes in the game.
The Hornets scored early in the second period after Towanda threatened seconds before but had to give the ball up on the Hornet 19-yard line. Prevost lost yardage back to the 14-yard line on the first play, but then hit end Larry Milhollen with a short pass over the line. Larry got away from two Towanda tacklers and galloped the 86 yards with the leather for the Hornet score. Prevost ran for the extra point and the Hornets held a 7-0 lead.
Wellsboro came close again just before the half when Prevost hit his ends Milhollen and Youdas with passes that carried to the Towanda 15-yard line, but the Hornets had to give up the ball with a minute left in the half.
Towanda nearly tied the game in the third period when halfback Ron Allis was hit on the one-yard line, fumbled, and Wellsboro's halfback, Lynn Halstead, picked up the tricky bouncing pigskin and ran it back to the 17-yard line.
Early m the fourth quarter Towanda scored after Dick Lewis carried the mail most of the time, then halfback Ron Allis ran around the end 13 yards for the touchdown. The run for the extra point was no good and Wellsboro held a 7-6 lead.
Wellsboro took the ensuing kickoff on the nine-yard line and returned it to the 20-yard line. After Prevost's first pass failed, he then hit three in a row, the first to Milhollen that carried to the 40-yard line, the second one to Jim Youdas good for 19 yards to the Towanda 41-yard line.
His third found Milhollen open again and it carried to Towanda's 21-yard line, Prevost then handed off to Ernie Kennedy who rammed to the 12-yard line. Prevost went off tackle to the eight-yard line and from there Ivan Kerr ran around the end for the score. The pass for extra point failed and the Hornets led 13-6.
The Hornets lead was short lived as Towanda drove back to score in nine plays. With Dick Lewis and Gary Cobb taking turns running the ball, the two backs brought the pigskin from their 28-yard line to the Hornet 34-yard line, Ron Allis then threw a long pass to end Bill Welliver who ran in the end zone for the touchdown. Gary Cobb ran for the point after, as Towanda tied up the game 13-13.
With three and a half minutes left in the contest the Hornets took Towanda's kickoff and on the first play from scrimmage Towanda's Rick Isaac intercepted a deflected Prevost pass on the Hornet 35-yard line. Allis with a burst of speed, scampered around the right end to the five-yard line and on the next play fumbled about a foot away from the goal line where Elaine Bush fell on the ball and the Hornets took over on the 20-yard line.
Time was a big factor now with only 55 seconds left, the Hornets were not going to be denied this last touchdown opportunity. With Prevost pitching the leather and ends Larry Milhollen and Jim Youdas making some great catches, the Hornets began their drive.
Youdas took the first 20 yarder from Prevost to the 40-yard line. Prevost then ran to the 44-yard line, then one play later, pitched a long one to Milhollen with the play covering 34 yards to the Towanda 22-yard line. Another eleven yarder from Prevost to Youdas and the Hornets were on the Towanda 11-yard line.
With 17 seconds left, Kerr dashed to the eight-yard line, another attempted at the line brought no gain, but Prevost hit Youdas in the end zone for the game winning touchdown. Prevost ran for the point after and the Hornets led 20-13 with eight seconds left. Towanda took the Hornet kickoff on the 23-yard line but time ran out after their pass was incomplete.
This Saturday the Hornets will meet Edison High School of Elmira on the home field. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
