Hornets topple to Trojans onslaught.
The Troy Trojans handed the Wellsboro Green Hornets their second season loss Saturday on the home field, 12-6.
Although the Troy eleven banged big holes in the Hornet line for 192 yards rushing, it was two Hornet fumbles that gave the Trorjans its scoring opportunities.
The Hornets played the visitors on even terms for one and a half quarters and without two of the teams backfield standouts. The Hornets were on a drive from their 37-yard line when Troy recovered their fumble oh the 50-yard line. On eleven plays, with quarterback Dave Hurlburt and halfback Butcher lugging the mail on some great runs, Hurlburt finally seored from one yard out.
Early in the third period Troy's Jim McCord jumped on another Hornet fumble on the Hornet 20-yard line, right after Jim Youdas had plucked Lou Prevost's aerial from the air. On four running plays with Hurlburt doing the work, Butcher hit paydirt from five yards out. Troy led 12-0.
At the start of the final period the Hornets took a Trojan punt on the 30-yard line and drove the remaining 70 yards for the squad's only score. With Ivan Kerr and Lou Prevost hammering their way on the ground and with Prevost hitting end Larry Milhollen in the air, along with some Troy penalties, the Hornets scored when Prevost hit Milhollen in the end zone.
The Trojans were an another drive when the game ended by taking the Hornet kickoff on the 15-yard line. Halfback John Butcher found a weak link in the right side of the Hornet line early in the game and exploited it throughout. On this last drive John carried the pigskin seven times for 39 yards. The Trojans drove to the Hornet 31-yard line at the gun.
Butcher was Troy's biggest ground gainer with 90 yards in 21 carries. Hurlburt gained 57 for 14 carries For the Hornets, Ivan Kerr ran for 25 yards for six carries and LQU Prevost
worked like a demon in getting 27 yards for 13 carries.
This Saturday, the Hornets will meet Towanda for a night game at Towanda, it will be the Hornets third league contest. Game time is set at 8:00 p.m.
