Jones Sparks Hornet Win Over Athens.

By: Karen Spink | Wellsboro Gazette | September 27, 1973

Friday night the Wellsboro Hornets won their first game of the season by defeating a strong Athens Bulldog squad 7-0 on the Hornets' home field.

The only score of the night came in the first quarter when Linford Jones broke off tackle for a 73 yard touchdown run. The extra point was added by freshman Jeff Coolidge.

The heavily favored Athens team's defeat was mainly brought about by the exceptional play of the always stingy Wellsboro defense. This has been the third consecutive game in which the opposition has failed to score a touchdown against the Hornet defense.

The visitors were held to 32 total rushing yards and 22 yards through the air. Their only scoring threat came early in the second quarter when they had a first down and goal to go from the Hornet five-yard line. Here the Wellsboro defense stiffened and the Athens Bulldogs failed to reach paydirt.

The Wellsboro offense amassed a total of 166 yards on the ground and completed six out of 10 passes for 77 yards. The Hornets had numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game, but failed to take advantage with the exception of Jones' long touchdown gallop.

The small and relativey in-experienced Hornet team appears to be improving on a weekly basis. Their main attributes are their overwhelming enthusiasm and general overall hustle and desire. The next game will be played on the Wellsboro High School field on Friday against Renovo.
