Hornets Defeated by Thomas Edison, 8-0.

By: Karen Spink | Wellsboro Gazette | September 20, 1973

Did the Hornets really lose to Thomas Edison Friday night? Looking at the score you would have to say yes, but in a deeper sense it was not a defeat for Wellsboro, but a victory.

For all those who did not attend, the first half was full of suspense even though there was no scoring. Linford Jones was extremely impressive as he led several drives deep into Spartan territory but Wellsboro, plagued by fumbles, couldn't manage any touchdowns.

Early in the third quarter Lindford once again spurred on a Hornet drive that ended drastically. As soon as he was tackled Thomas Edison players for no obvious reason, started a fight. Fortunately, no Wellsboro players were seriously injured, even though Linford was shaken up a little, and as one coach very nicely put it, "They couldn't beat us playing fair, they had to hurt our best players."

As far as anyone except for Thomas Edison was concerned, Wellsboro had a victory right then.

But that wasn't the end of the game. With 22 seconds left on the clock, the Spartans blocked a punt and scored six points. Then they ran the ball around right end for the extra point. The final score was Thomas Edison 8, Wellsboro 0. Did the Hornets really lose?
