Hornets Battle to 15-12 Victory Over Black Knights.
In their final game of the 1973 season Wellsboro overpowered the Towanda Black Knights to a score of 15-12 on the Hornets' home field.
They now hold a league record of 4-2 and stand at 54-1 overall.
One of the Hornet touchdowns and the only safety were scored by the defense. The touchdown, which came in the first quarter, was made by Bob Ramsey when he recovered a punt blocked by Ed Smithgall. Tom Young kicked the extra point. The safety was made late in the fourth quarter with approximately two minutes showing on the clock.
Senior Rick Hall ran 46 yards around left end for the last Hornet touchdown but the attempt for the extra point failed.
Quarterback Blaine Antoine suffered a broken collarbone in the Boliva game and Steve Copp has led Wellsboro to victories in the last two games. The Hornet offense totaled 95 yards rushing and 39 yards passing against Towanda.
Both teams were well-matched offensively. It was the Wellsboro defense that excelled. Brian Luke and Bill Callahan led the team in tackles made, Ed Smithgall blocked a punt, and Ron Ford had two interceptions.
The Hornets will lose the following players this year due to graduation: Blaine Antoine, Ron Ford, John Kantz, Kurbin Dochstader, Rick Hall, Mark Reese, Rock Hewitt, Bill Callahan, Ed Smithgall, Brian Luke, and Scott Bray. The above seniors can take pride in being responsible for the first winning season in ten years.
