By: Wellsboro Gazette | November 14, 1974

The Wellsboro Hornet football team won their season finale by defeating the Towanda Black Knights, 13-7, unde the lights at Towanda Friday. Ted Yeager's squad finished the year with a 7-2 overall record and a 5-1 showing in the Northen Tier League. This places them in a first-spot tie with the Towanda team who ended the season with identical 7-2 and 5-1 records.

The Black Knights scored first on a Steve Casey pass to Kyle Moore. The extra point kick was good giving Towanda a 7-0 lead.

Senior fullback Tom Young did all the scoring for the Hornets. Their first touchdown came on the first play of the second quarter following a long drive which included a 57 yard run by Linford Jones and a a Kevin Spink pass to Jim Carson good for 12 yards. Young charged in from two yards out. His kick for the extra point was blocked, leaving the Hornets behind at halftime with a 7-6 score.

The winning touchdown came late in the third quarter and capped a 48 yard drive by the Hornets. Jones and Young did much of the ball-carrying, with Young crossing over from the five-yard line for the score. His extra point was good.

The Hornet defense, led by Jeff Coolidge, Darryl Kauffman, and Bob Ramsey stopped the Black Knights in the second half. Towanda's only threat came on a drive from their 19-yard line to Wellsboro's 23-yard line, but Hornet Darrell Keck recovered a fumble to end that scoring chance.
