Friday night, September 12, the Wellsboro Hornets added another win to their record by defeating Thomas Edison, 27-7.

The Hornet defense, led by Terry Ingerick and Darryl Kauffman, made three spectacular stands to thwart the Spartans' scoring efforts.

Matt Coolidge electrified the home fans by returning the opening kickoff 65 yards to the Thomas Edison 15-yard line. That was the spark that Wellsboro needed to record their first victory over the Spartans in a four-year series. Five plays later, Wellsboro scored on a two yard dive by Barry Jordan.

But Edison was not to be put down. Hundred and sixty-pound halfback John Tokar received the kickoff and sprinted 83 yards to tie the score at 7-7. For the remainder of the first half Edison was unable to cross midfield.

Early in the second quarter, Wellsboro took a punt on their own 42-yard line and then proceeded to march downfield to the one-yard line. There, Edison's defense held until a fourth down attempt by Jeff Coolidge put Wellsboro once more in the lead.

Little more than halfway through this quarter a Spartan pass was intercepted by Jeff Coolidge who scrambled to Edison's 34-yard line before being brought down. Following a 15 yard penalty against Wellsboro, Tim Smith received a 40 yard touchdown pass from Hornet quarterback Jeff Coolidge. The score at half was Wellsboro 21, Thomas Edison 7.

The third quarter showed no gain on the scoreboard but provided the fans with loads of excitement. After receiving the second half kickoff, the Spartans ran out eight minutes on the clock to end up two yards away from paydirt. But here, the Wellsboro defense got tough and stopped Tokar twice on would be touchdown plays.

Thomas Edison came up with plenty of other chances in the fourth quarter. Wellsboro fumbled and the Spartans found themselves in good field position on the Hornet 12-yard line.

Despite a penalty and an eight yard loss, a determined Thomas Edison quarterback Wakefield hit Mike Palmer with a pass that took them to the Wellsboro two-yard line, where the stubborn Wellsboro defense held again.

Edison was once again in possession of the ball in Wellsboro territory following a short Hornet punt. From there, Gary Wheel caught a pass for an 18 yard gain to put Edison on Wellsboro's 19-yard line. But Jeff Coolidge anticipated the next play perfectly to pick off a pass and spring 102 yards for the final touchdown of the game.

Another touchdown was called back because of a clipping penalty on a 65 yard punt return by Hornet Tim Smith.
