The Wellsboro Green Hornets continued their winning ways last Saturday by spoiling the Thomas Edison Spartans season debut by the score of 20-0.

The Hornets pushed their season's record to 3-0. This marks the first time the Hornets under head coach Ted Yeager have won their first 3 games. In the past two seasons they had been thwarted after winning the first two.

This week's victory was again a demonstration of Wellsboro's hard hitting defense. For the second time this year the Hornets have recorded a shut-out. The entire defense turned in a superlative performance. Stellar performances this week for the defense were Rhett Gorda, senior defensive end, Brian Parsells, junior defensive end, Terry Ingerick, junior middle guard, Steve Radocaj, junior linebacker, and Jeff Coolidge, senior safety.

The Hornet defense never allowed the Spartans a chance to get going, as they held them to minus 20 yards on the ground and allowed only 40 yards in the air. The defense will face their toughest challenge this week, when the Hornets travel to Towanda Friday night to take on the Black Knights, defending league champs.

Towanda is led by last year's All-Twin Tiers quarterback Steve Casey and All-Northern Tier League running back Bryon Fuller, who give Towanda the best one-two punch in the league and possibly the most explosive offense.

The Hornets offense is not one that can be overlooked. Although in their first two outings Wellsboro has displayed a "grind 'em out" ball control ground offense, this was the week they took the wraps off their solid passing attack. Led by the passing of senior quarterback Jeff Coolidge, who connected on 10 passes out of 16 attempts for 148 yards and the receiving of Tim Smith and Jerry Carson and running of Jay Buker the Hornet offense split the Spartan defense for 312 yards.

Although plagued by a rash of penalties Wellsboro got on the scoreboard with 58 seconds left in the first quarter as Jay Buker took a pitchout from Coolidge on the option and sailed untouched into the end zone from six yards out. Randy Gross added the conversion and the scoreboard read 7-0.

After an exchange of fumbles and punts Wellsboro was headed goalward again midway in the second period. Utilizing eight plays the Hornets pushed the score to 14-0 as fullback Randy Gross burst in from the five-yard line and then added the extra point on another perfect placement. This score allowed Coach Yeager's chargers to retire to the locker room with a comfortable lead.

The final scoring of the. day occurred with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter when Jeff Coolidge circled right on the bootleg and found senior split end Tim Smith in the end zone for an easy 18 yards and six points. The conversion was wide and the score remained at 20-0. The remainder of the game was controlled by the Wellsboro defense and saw the Hornets begin to substitute on offense.

The Hornets face their toughest challenge so far this season as they invade Towanda to take on the Black Knights who boast a record of 2-1. Winning against Sayre and Northwest and dropping a hard fought game to always tough Shamokin 21-6.
