Green Hornets have easy victory over Troy.

The Wellsboro Green Hornets extended their seasons record to 2-0 Friday night with an easy victory over a yount Troy team 29-6.
Defense again was the name of the game, while the starting defense remained in the game the Troy offense was held to a standstill. During the first half, the Hornet defense held Troy to minus eleven yards while scoring a touchdown of their own.
The game started slowly with Wellsboro receiving the opening kick off and moving the ball on the ground but the Hornets were forced to punt. The defense allowed no yardage and Wellsboro again could not sustain a long drive and were forced to punt. The defense remained solid and the Hornets got the ball in good field position.
This time the offense was not to be kept out of the end zone. In a seven play drive Wellsboro put their first points on the board when Jeff Coolidge circled left end for three yards and the touchdown. The point after by Randy Gross was perfect and the Hornets led 7-0 with one minute remaining in the first quarter.
The second quarter was filled with fireworks, all provided by Wellsboro. The defense went right to work and forced Troy to fumble on their own 42-yard line. This time the Hornets used six plays to reach paydirt. The big play in the series was an 18 yard pass from quarterback Jeff Coolidge to senior split end Tim Smith. The touchdown which capped the drive was again on a sweep around left end, this time by tailback Jay Buker. The point was added by Randy Gross and the Hornets led 14-0 with 10:22 remaining in the first half.
Following the kick off the Wellsboro defense got into the scoring column when junior linebacker Steve Radocaj intercepted a Trojan pass on their 35-yard line and raced untouched into the end zone. Clearing Radocaj's path to the end zone was senior defensive end Rhett Gorda, who threw two blocks to spring the linebacker. On the point after attempt the snap from center was bad and holder Jeff Coolidge was forced to scramble until he spotted Gross in the end zone and fired a perfect strike to give Wellsboro a two-point conversion. With 8:31 left in the half the score was Wellsboro 22-0.
The defense remained tough and forced Troy to punt. Again getting the ball in excellent field poition and with the second team backfield in the game led by junior quarterback Tim Cisco the Hornets marched for what turned ou tto be their final touchdown.
Using seven plays, the biggest of which was an eleven yard scamper by junior halfback Jerry Carson, Wellsboro scored on a four yard plunge by quarterback Cisco. Gross again was perfect with the kick, and Wellsboro went into the locker room at halfting leading 29-0.
The second half of the game saw Wellsboro substituting frequently and by the end of the game all the Hornets were in the game. The Hornet offense, although not putting any more points on the scoreboard, continued to move the ball well. The Trojans tallied midway through the fourth quarter when halfback Jerry Coyle sliced through the center of the Hornet defense, then broke to the sideline and scampered 56 yards to paydirt. Wellsboro's total offense was 288 yards while Troy totaled 138.
The Hornets next game is this Saturday with Thomas Edison High School in Elmira at 2:00 p.m.
