The Wellsboro Green Hornets continued their winning ways with an impressive one sided victory over the Cowanesque Valley Indians 45-6 on Saturday.

Using 40 players, many of whom were sophomores and freshmen, Wellsboro was able to use three full offensive and defensive teams.

The Hornets again used a devastating ground attack, which amassed 355 yards on the ground, leading the Hornets to 20 first downs, and a stingy defense allowing the Indians only 34 yards total offense.

Leading the offensive surge for the Hornets were the three tailbacks Coach Ted Yeager alternated. Starter Dave Gibson amassed 105 yards, second teamer Bill Bower led all rushers with 116 yards, and Steve Bergeson chipped in with 65 yards. The trio accounted for 286 yards and four touchdowns.

The Hornets wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. The Indians won the toss of the coin and elected to receive. Ty Antoine with the help of a brisk breeze lucked into the end zone giving the ball to Cowanesque on their own 20-yard line. After running three plays that netted them nothing the Indians were forced to punt. Defensive tackle Randy Weimar raced through to block Kevin Carpenter's punt, and the ball rolled out of bounds at the two-yard line. Two plays later senior tailback Dave Gibson sliced in for the score. Antoine added the extra point and the Hornets led 7-0.

Within two minutes of the first score, Wellsboro again hit paydirt, this time fullback Steve Radocaj crashed into the end zone from two yards out. The point after touchdown failed and the Hornets led 13-0.

The Hornet second offense rose to the occasion early in the second quarter. After losing an opportunity to score earlier because of a fumble, they would not be denied as they drove goalward. This time tailback Bill Bower bulled his way in from the one for his first touchdown of the day. The try for extra point failed and the Hornets led 19-0.

Wellsboro continued to hold the Indian offense in check so the responsibility of scoring fell on the shoulders of the Indian defense.

With time running out in the first half and Wellsboro again deep in CV territory, sophomore quarterback Doug Keck dropped to pass and was sacked by Indian standout Kevin Carpenter. The ball popped loose and Carpenter in full stripe gathered in the errant pigskin and raced 72 yards unmolested to paydirt. The extra point attempt was broken up by defensive back Ty Antoine, and the Hornets retired to the locker room at half time owning a comfortable 19-6 lead.

The second half progressed much the same as the first. The Hornet offense continued to grind out yardage and points and the defense held the Indians in check. The two Hornet third quarter touchdowns were added by quarterback Tim Cisco on runs of one yard and four yards. The Hornets led at the end of three quarters, 33-6.

The fourth quarter saw Wellsboro empty their bench giving the second and third teams adequate playing opportunity. The second offense chipped in with another touchdown when tailback Bill Bower again scored, this time on a sweep from 15 yards out.

The final score came in the closing minutes when tailback Steve Berguson capped a third offense scoring drive with a five yard run to paydirt. Both extra points were missed in the fourth quarter, and the score ended Wellsboro 45, Cowanesque 6.

Outstanding single play performances of the second half were turned in by defensive tackle John Henneman by blocking an Indian punt, and freshman linebacker Steve Carlton who intercepted an Indian pass.

The Hornets entertain the Notre Dame Crusaders this Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. This game has been chosen as this year's homecoming, and the football team would like all alumni football players to join them after the game for a "Homecoming Huddle." This will be an informal get together with refreshments being served.
