Friday night the Welisboro Green Hornets pushed their winning streak to seven and kept their hopes alive for at least a share of the Northern Tier League title with a 37-0 win over the Towanda Black Knights.
Playing before a discouragingly small crowd on a perfect night for football the Hornets struggled through the first half before getting into high gear to open the game up in the second half. It was a combination of a stubborn Towanda defense and costly penalties and turnovers that kept the game close through the first 24 minutes of play.
After holding the Black Knight offense in check on its first possession the Hornets took over on their own 35-yard line. Moving goalward the Hornets, faced with a fourth down situation deep in Towanda territory, sent in Randy Gross who kicked a 25 yard field goal to give the Hornets an early 3-0 lead.
Although the Hornet offense was able to rack up 213 yards total offense the first half they were unable to score due to key penalties and turn overs. The defense however was not so limited and provided some scoring of their own. Midway through the second period, linebacker Steve Radocaj intercepted a Black Knight pass then bulled and danced his way 42 yards into the end zone behind blocks thrown by John Driebelbies and Jerry Carson. Gross added the extra point and Welisboro led at half time 10-0.
The second half saw the Hornets open up more on offense while continuing to play aggressive defense.
On the very first play of their second possession, quarterback Tim Cisco dropped back behind perfect pass blocking and fired the bomb into the waiting arms of Kevin Davis who gathered it in and raced into the end zone completing a 73 yard pass play. Gross again added the extra point With 7:48 left in the third quarter the scoreboard read Hornets 17-0.
On their next possession the Hornets moved 68 yards in 12 plays to again score The big play in this drive was a Cisco pass caught by senior tight end Art Leisey for 33 yards.
The drive was capped by senior tailback Dave Gibson on an eight yard burst over the left side. Gross kicked the extra point and Wellsboro led 24-0. As the quarter changed, Welisboro was again in possession and driving.
Needing only 4 plays the Hornets moved 53 yards to score. This time senior fullback Steve Radocaj took the pitchout around right end and followed outstanding blocking by Kevin Davis. Jerry Carson, Vince Driebelbies, Jim Bowen and Terry Ingerick to cross the goal stripe untouched The PAT was wide and the Hornets increased their lead to 30-0.
Beginning to substitute on its next possession the Hornets were again driving, this time with the play calling of sophomore Doug Keck. Needing 7 plays the Hornets moved 50 yards for their final score. Again it was Gibson who crashed over from seven yards out. Gross was back on target and the score jumped to 37-0.
This was the last home game for the Hornets. They end their season this week on the road against North Penn. Seniors playing in their final game are Randy Gross, Tim Cisco, Scott Young, Bill Blower, Dave Gibson, Art Leisey, Steve Radocaj, John Callahan, Terry Ingerick, Sam Smith, Vince Driebelbies, John Henneman, Randy Weimar, Jerry Carson, Jon Carson, Brian Parsells, Steve Bergeson and Kevin Davis.
