Wyalusing built up a 22-0 halftime lead and held on to defeat the Wellsboro Green Hornets 34-14 in NTL football action Friday night at Wyalusing High School.
The loss drops Wellsboro's record to 0-5 overall, 0-3 in league competition.
The Rams spent little time in getting their first score. On their first possession of the game, Wyalusing drove 56 yards, the final 29 coming on a scoring strike from quarterback Jim Huffman to Rich Gowin. The Rams successfully completed the two-point conversion play on a pass from Huffman to Bobby Sowden.
The Rams took over again on their own 38-yard line and proceeded to drive to the Hornet six-yard line where the Wellsboro defense stiffened. On a fourth down play, Huffman scored on a quarterback keeper.
Huffman found Gowin in the end zone for another two-point conversion and Wyalusing was on top 16-0.
In the second period Wyalusing threatened to break the contest open, when they marched 86 yards for their third score of the first half. A Huffman to Sowden aerial covered 46 of the 86 yards and Huffman to Ron Hugo for 11 yards resulted in the touchdown.
The conversion was missed as the teams went to the locker rooms with Wyalusing on top, 22-0.
Early in the third stanza, Wellsboro found the end zone. After a fumble recovery by Hornet Bruce Lindsey at the Ram 48-yard line, Ty Antoine and John Driebelbies combined for 46 yards on four carries. Driebelbies going the final five yards for the touchdown. The teams then traded turnovers and punts until late in the fourth quarter.
With just over five minutes left in the ball game, Wyalusing was held on downs at the 50-yard line. Wellsboro took over and three plays later scored on a razzle dazzle pass from quarterback Doug Keck to Todd Antoine. Keck began the play by handing off to Ty Antoine who handed to Greg Henry on an apparent reverse. Henry flipped the ball back to Keck, who then found Antoine alone downfield. Remember the flea flicker!
The Hornets did manage to add some suspense to the contest when they recovered an onside kick, but the Rams turned an intercepted pass into one touchdown and a Hornet fumble into yet another score, all in the final three minutes.
Wellsboro hosts Cowanesque Valley this Friday night at the Wellsboro High School field beginning at 8:00 p.m.
