The Canton Warriors spotted Wellsboro a 6-0 lead after a game opening 77 yard touchown on a kickoff return and went on to trounce tbe Hornets 44-6 Saturday afternoon at Canton. The loss puts Wellsboro's season slate at 0-3.
Scott Cloos took the opening kickoff and returned it 77 yards for a quick touchdown. It was the first time that the Warriors had been scored on this year. After that, however, it was all Canton as the Warriors finished the day with a rushing offense that totalled 386 yards.
Quarterback Russ Vermilya opened Canton's scoring as he scampered 32 yards on an option play to paydirt. Jay Perry put the Warriors ahead to stay later in the first period as he dashed 19 yards to score. Perry added a two-point conversion run and Canton led, 14-6 after one quarter.
Fourteen second period points put the game away for Canton by halftime.
Mike Spencer found a hole on the left side and took the ball seven yards to the end zone. Then Vermilya found Larry Kutz on a 13 yard touchdown aerial. The touchdown throw was one of only three passes attempted by Canton on the day. The halftime count was Canton 28, Wellsboro 6.
Vermilya and Robert Rockwell closed out the Canton scoring. Vermilya ran five yards to a score in the third stanza and Rockwell raced for 39 yards and a touchdown in the final period.
Vermilya ended the afternoon with 127 yards on 15 carries, Perry added 110 yards and Spencer chipped in with 72 yards.
The Hornets next game is scheduled for this Friday night versus Wyalusing. It is the Hornets' home opener.
