Hornets blank Notre Dame, 8-0.

Anyone who missed the first two plays of the Wellsboro-Notre Dame football game Saturday missed all the scoring that was to be for the afternoon.
A 32 yard touchdown run by Scott Cloos on the opening play from scrimmage following a fumbled kickoff by the Crusaders, led the Hornets to an 8-0 triumph. The win was the second in a row for Wellsboro after four consecutive defeats to begin the season.
Cloos had a fine afternoon finish ing with a game high 155 yards on 20 attempts. The Hornet defense also had a super game, holding Notre Dame to only 125 yards total offense.
After Notre Dame's Gerry Burke fumbled the opening kickoff on his own 32-yard line, Cloos scooted up the middle almost untouched en route to his touchdown. Quarterback Doug Keck added the two-point conversion on a keeper play.
Other scoring opportunities were few and far between. The Hornets did have one more excellent chance to score, but a hearty goal line defense by Notre Dame stymied the touchdown bid.
After some nifty running by Cloos and fullback John Reese, the Hornets had the ball 1st-and-10 on the Notre Dame seven-yard line. Keck then threw an incomplete pass into the end zone, but Notre Dame's Joe Gizzi was called for pass interference. That gave Wellsboro a 1st-and-goal at the one, but they were unable to push it over for the score.
The only serious Crusader threat of the day came in the final stanza. Notre Dame quarterback Jon Poteat hit Dan Flanagan for a 50 yard pass play to the Hornet 15-yard line. After three plays netted Notre Dame only five yards, John Trifoso was stopped short of a first down on a fourth down pitch out and run.
The Hornets' next game is scheduled for this Friday evening at 8:00 p.m., a home contest versus Towanda.
