Hornets win first League game.
| presented by: |
The Wellsboro Green Hornet football team won their first league game Friday night by dumping Towanda, 18-12.
The Hornets are now 1-3 in Northern Tier League action and 3-4 overall. Towanda is 0-2-1 in league play and 2-2 overall.
Towanda got on the scoreboard first as they ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Later in the period, quarterback Doug Keck scored from two yards out to bring Wellsboro back to a 6-6 tie.
The second quarter proved to be the Hornet margin of victory. Scott Cloos, who ended the night with 150 yards rushing, scored two touchdowns, both on six yard runs. His scores gave Wellsboro what proved to be an insurmountable 18-6 halflime bulge.
Towanda scored the only touchdown of the second half midway through the final period.
In addition to Cloos' fine running, Keck and John Reese teamed up on several nifty pass plays in crucial situations. Keck threw for 120 yards, 100 of them going to Reese. Both offensive and defensive lines for Wellsboro played well, too.
The Hornets next game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against North Penn at Island Park.
