Claes Julin booted a field goal in the opening minutes of play and a spirited Wellsboro defense shut out the previously unbeaten Canton Warriors Saturday afternoon at Wellsboro.

The result was a nail biting 3-0 upset victory for the Hornets.

In the opening stanza the Hornets kicked off to Canton. On the first play from scrimmage, Warrior halfback Benji Darrow coughed up the football and Wellsboro recovered at the Warrior 10-yard line. After three plays netted a total of four yards, the Hornets attempted a field goal on fourth down. The kick was successful and that was all the scoring there was to be on the afternoon.

The Hornet defense stopped three serious scoring threats over the rest of the game. With time running down in the final period, Warrior quarterback Robert Rockwell had Canton on the move, with passes to Matt Ward and also some fine running by Ward.

With a little over one minute showing on the clock, Canton had a first and goal inside Wellsboro's 10-yard line, but the Hornets stiffened, took over on downs and ran the final 49 seconds off the clock.

Canton also seriously threatened after Julin's field goal. They moved the ball down to the Wellsboro 20-yard line, but once again the stingy Hornet defense held them on downs.

In the third period, a Steve Carlton interception thwarted another Canton drive at the Hornet 20-yard line, following a fumble loss by Wellsboro at their own 39-yard line.

Carleton, Julin, Brad Coolidge, and Mike Metarko all received game balls for outstanding performances for the Hornets.

This Friday night the Hornets, now 2-0 on the season, travel to Wyalusing for an 8:00 p.m. game.
