The Wellsboro Green Hornets and North Penn Panthers both came away victorious in grid action Saturday.
The Hornets held Cowanesque Valley to 81 total yards for the game and delighted the Homecoming crowd with a 24-0 victory. The Panthers played previously undefeated Coudersport at Blossburg, and a fine defensive effort earned them a 7-0 triumph.
Wellsboro scored in the opening period on a one yard run by quarterback Todd Coolidge, and in the second stanza on a 13 yard run by Carl Buss. Claes Julin added a 25 yard field goal as the Hornets held a comfortable 19-0 pad at the half.
The second half turned into a defensive struggle and after a scoreless third period, Julin booted a 39 yard field goal and the Hornet defense recorded a safety with time running out.
Paul Mitchell led Hornet rushers with 86 yards.
At Blossburg, the Panther defense was the whole story. They held Coudersport to a total of only 45 yards on the day and never let Coudy pass the midfield stripe. The only score of the afternoon came on a one yard run by Ted Kelchner midway through the second quarter.
Dan Hutcheson, a Panther linebacker, had a super afternoon, recording 15 tackles. 8 unassisted and 7 assists.
Wellsboro upped its season record to 3-1 while North Penn is now 3-2.
