North Penn held Cowanesque Valley to a total of only 69 yards total offense while they garnered 321 in dumping the Indians, 20-0, Saturday afternoon.
Wellsboro traveled to Notre Dame (Elmira) on Friday night and came out on the short end of a 7-6 score.
North Penn scored their first points on a four yard run by halfback Ted Kelchner. Just before the half the Panthers upped their lead to 13-0 on a 60 yard screen pass touchdown from quarterback Tim Llewellyn to Dan Hutcheson.
After a scoreless third period, Dave Hall closed out the scoring with a 32 yard interception return for a touchdown. North Penn is now 3-2 on the season, while Cowanesque fell to 0-7.
Wellsboro scored first in its contest versus Notre Dame, but could not hold on.
After a scoreless opening period. Notre Dame quarterback Ted Whitmer threw an interception to Steve Wilson on the Notre Dame 25-yard line. Wilson returned the ball 20 yards to the five with just under five minutes left in the half. Steve Carleton banged over from three yards out two plays later and the Hornets led 6-0. The two-point conversion try was unsuccessful.
Notre Dame did not trail for long. After Wellsboro lucked out, Whitmer hit Curtis Brown on a look-in pattern over the middle. Brown raced 69 yards to paydirt and the score was tied with 4:11 still left in the half. Stan Knecht booted the extra point and that was it for scoring on the day.
Perhaps the biggest series for the Crusaders to preserve their victory came immediately following the two scores. The Hornets drove 76 yards in 10 plays as time was expiring in the first half. On a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line, Notre Dame held and took over on downs as time ran out.
Wellsboro halfback Paul Mitchell accounted for 56 of the 76 yards on the drive Mitchell also had over 100 yards rushing by halftime.
