Wellsboro and North Penn, heading for a showdown this Saturday afternoon in Wellsboro, both lost over the weekend.

Host Towanda, led by halfback Jerry Kacyon's 106 rushing yards and one touchdown clobbered Wellsboro 35-7 Friday night. Meanwhile, Canton coach Miller Moyer finally recorded his 100th career win as Canton fought off North Penn, 10-8 at Blossburg Saturday.

Kacyon scored the first of the Black Knights' five touchdowns late in the first period on a 74 yard jaunt. In the ensuing series, Jeff Mattocks scooped up a Green Hornet fumble and rumbled 78 yards for a score and a 14-0 bulge. Another Wellsboro fumble led to Towanda's third score, a nine yard run by Randy Vargeson in the second stanza.

Towanda picked up where it left off in the third period, taking the kickoff and marching in for their fourth touchdown, this one a 14 yard run by Chris Esmus. The final Black Knight touchdown came in the final quarter of play when Jim Steele banged over from a yard out. Rob Holman hit all five of his extra point attempts.

Wellsboro scored Its only points with the clock winding down on a one yard keeper by quarterback Todd Coolidge. Claes Julin booted the extra point.

Paul Mitchell was Wellsboro's leading ground gainer with 81 yards on 16 carries.

A 35 yard field goal by Canton kicker Morton Abel turned out to be the difference in their fray with North Penn. Abel booted the three pointer midway through the opening stanza to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.

North Penn came back to take an 8-3 lead in the second quarter. Quarterback Tim Llewellyn capped the Panther drive with a one yard run. Llewellyn also ran the successful two point conversion.

Canton went ahead for good in the third period on a three yard scoring run by Wade Crimbring. Abel added the extra point to close out the scoring.
