Three second half touchdowns gave the Wellsboro Green Hornet football team a 22-6 win in their season opener. The game was played Saturday afternoon at Wellsboro. Troy is now 0-2 for the year.
The Hornets fell behind early when Perry Eiffert intercepted a Todd Coolidge pass at the Hornet 41-yard line and ran it back to the one. From there Randy Kelly took it in and Troy led, 6-0.
Thanks to some fine defensive play by Steve Carleton and the rest of the Wellsboro defense, there was no more scoring in the half.
In their first possession of the second half, the Hornets went ahead to stay. Coolidge scored on a quarterback keeper from a yard out and Carleton ran in for a successful two-point conversion.
With the score 8-6, John Melko picked up a loose ball and ran 40 yards for the Hornets' second touchdown of the third period. Carleton's run for two points put Wellsboro up, 16-6.
The final score of the game came when Chris Reese scampered five yards for a score.
