Hornets fall to Canton, 28-12.
| presented by: |
The Wellsboro Green Hornet football team looked as though they might come away with their first victory of the young season at home against Canton on Saturday afternoon.
However, when the final whistle blew, they were on the short end of a 28-12 score. The Hornets' record drops to 0-3 for the season.
On the second play from scrimmage following the opening kickoff, Hornet quarterback Todd Coolidge hit flanker Jack Maynard on a deep post pattern good for a 79 yard touchdown. The two-point conversion try failed, Wellsboro led 6-0.
After an exchange of punts, Coolidge again found Maynard on a 25 yard pass play which set up a 10 yard scoring strike from Coolidge to Tony Driebelbies. The conversion try failed again, but Wellsboro held a commanding 12-0 lead as the first period came to a close.
The second stanza belonged to the Warriors, much as the first half did to Wellsboro. Bob Strozyk scored on a four yard run to bring Canton back 12-7.
In the final seconds of the first half Canton quarterback Bill Chamberlin threw a 23 yard scoring strike to Alan Williams.
Matt Ward kicked both extra points as the Warriors took a 14-12 lead into the locker room.
The second half was all Canton as they shut down the Hornet offense and added two more touchdowns, one in each of the final two periods. Benji Darrow scored on a 43 yard run and Strozyk bolted in from seven yards out to seal the Warrior win. Ward again added extra point kicks.
Dave Stahl, although he scored no touchdowns, rushed for a game high 123 yards. Darrow added 88 for Canton.
Top performances turned in from Wellsboro players included quarterback Coolidge who hit on 5-of-14 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Maynard hauled in 3 passes for 103 yards and one score, and Driebelbies had one catch for a touchdown and 15 yards rushing.
Defensively, the Hornets recovered three fumbles and intercepted two errant Canton aerials. Coolidge and Ken Gfroerer had the interceptions, both of which thwarted Canton scoring threats. Linebacker Carl Buss and defensive end Ken Leisey also played well defensively.
The Hornets' next game is this Saturday, October 3 at Cowanesque Valley at 2:00 p.m.
