The Notre Dame Crusaders used a powerful rushing game and, combined with six Wellsboro turnovers, defeated the Hornets 48-18 in Elmira on Saturday.
The loss drops Wellsboro's season football slate to 2-5. The Hornets' next contest is this Saturday, October 31, at 2:00 p.m. versus North Penn in Blossburg.
Notre Dame opened the scoring when tailback Mike Grosvenor ran 16 yards to cap a short 33 yard drive begun by a Hornet fumble. The kick was good and the Crusaders led, 7-0.
Wellsboro came right back and scored with a balanced 70 yard drive, with Jack Maynard going the final 3 yards. The two-point conversion try was unsuccessful and Notre Dame led, 7-6.
The final points of the opening period came on a 28 yard scoring run by Notre Dame fullback Mike Langan and a successful extra point kick.
The second period belonged to Notre Dame as they added two more touchdowns. The first came on a two yard run by Grosvenor and the second came on a five yard run by back Mike Tota. Both kicks were good and the Crusaders increased their lead to 28-6 by intermission.
Two Hornet scoring opportunities failed to produce any second period points. The first drive was thwarted by an interception in the end zone and the second was stopped five yards short of paydirt as time expired in the half.
Notre Dame scored the only third quarter points on a 35 yard run by Langan and a extra point kick.
The final stanza proved to be quite an offensive show. Each team scored twice, the first being Notre Dame on a 12 yard run by Langan, his third touchdown of the day.
Wellsboro countered with a 35 yard pass from quarterback Todd Coolidge to Carl Buss. The other big play in the drive was a 33 yard run by Ken Gfroerer.
Grosvenor, not to be outdone by Langan, scored his third touchdown of the afternoon on the first play from scrimmage following the Hornet kickoff. He ran 60 yards to put Notre Dame comfortably ahead, 48-12.
Wellsboro closed out the scoring on a seven yard run by fullback Stu Wheeler.
The Hornet JVs ended their season on an "up" note by downing the Crusader JV's, 12-6. Greg Probst scored on a six yard run and quarterback Tom Reese hit flanker Eric Wertz on a 63 yard scoring pass. The win put the Hornet junior varsity's final record at 2-4.
