The Wyalusing Rams used the running of tailback Tony Crawford to defeat Wellsboro's Green Hornet football team 40-8 Friday night at Wyalusing. The loss drops Wellsboro's season slate to 2-4.

Ram quarterback Brian Jennings opened the scoring in the opening stanza. His three yard run capped a 68 yard scoring drive. The kick was good and the Rams led, 7-0. There was no more scoring in the quarter.

Wellsboro enjoyed its only lead of the day early in'the second period. Linebacker Carl Buss picked up a Ram fumble and ran it 43 yards for a Hornet score. Jack Maynard ran the successful two-point conversion and Wellsboro led, 8-7.

That lead proved to be short-lived, however. Following the kickoff, Crawford ran 55 yards on the first play from scrimmage for a touchd. That score put Wyalusing on top, 13-8. With time running out in the half, the Rams added another six points. Dave Wyda hit Wayne Bennett on a 23 yard scoring strike and the Hornets trailed 19-8 at intermission.

The second half was all Wyalusing. They scored four times while holding Wellsboro completely in check. The Hornet offense, which had been so potent the last two games was hit by key injuries and could mount no serious scoring threats.

Crawford broke the game open as he ran the opening kickoff back 83 yards for another Ram score and a 24-8 bulge.

Wyalusing added three more scores in the final period. Crawford ran 20 yards for his third touchdown of the evening for the first score.

After Wellsboro lost a fumble on their own 17-yard line, Wade Pickett scored on a one yard run four plays later. In a matter of minutes, Wellsboro found themselves trailing, 38-8.

The final score of the night came when Ram lineman Pete Solowiej blocked a Todd Coolidge punt. The ball rolled out of the end zone for a safety.

Individual leaders for Wellsboro were Stu Wheeler who had 35 yards rushing, Jack Maynard and Carl Buss who each had 2 pass receptions, and Garth Mitchell who played well on both the offensive and defensive lines.

The Hornets' next game is this Saturday, October 24, at home against Notre Dame at 2:00 p.m.
