The Wellsboro High School football team amassed 346 yards in total offense Friday night to top visiting Cowanesque Valley, 29-7. It was the first win of the season for the 1-4 Hornets.
Todd Coolidge hit on 9-of-15 aerials for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Ken Gfroerer complimented Coolidge's efforts by rushing for an additional 114 yards on 19 carries.
Jeff Strohl, Hornet head coach stated, "We had some outstanding performances by second team players who were put into a starting role because of injuries. Andy Worthington had two receptions for 49 yards from his tight end spot; Nick Wallace filled in at fullback and rushed for 23 yards and two sophmores Dan Reese and John Hopkins did a good job on defense."
Wellsboro scored first in the opening quarter on a two yard pass play from Coolidge to Gfroerer. The point after put the Hornets ahead, 7-0.
Cowanesque Valley knotted the count early in the second period on a one yard scoring run by Woody Swan. A successful extra point made the score 7-7.
Jack Maynard hauled in a seven yard scoring strike from Coolidge before intermission to put Wellsboro ahead for good. Maynard finished the night with five catches good for 80 yards.
The Hornet defense took charge in the second half to hold the Indians scoreless. Wellsboro added two extra tallies on a one yard run by Gfroerer and a two yard jaunt by Coolidge.
Strohl was also impressed by his team's play along the offensive front. "Our offensive line played an excellent game controlling the line of scrimmage," he said. "Stu Wheeler, Craig Christman, Nick Lylo, Jeff Moss, and Gary Cooper opened holes that allowed us to rush for 199 yards."
Lylo was also the leading tackier for the fifth straight game with 9 stops.
This Friday evening Wellsboro hosts Canton at 8:00 p.m. in this year's Homecoming contest.
