Whitmer to Langan dooms Wellsboro, 40-6.

Notre Dame quarterback Ted Whitmer threw four touchdown passes, three to tailback Mike Langan to put an abrupt halt to Wellsboro's four-game winning streak Friday night, October 29.

The Crusaders added two more running touchdowns to topple the visiting Green Hornets, 40-6. The loss drops Wellsboro to 4-5 overall with one game remaining. The Hornets are 2-4 in Twin Tiers League play.

Langan caught three passes for 206 yards (a Twin Tiers single game pass receiving yardage record) and three touchdowns. Whitmer finished the evening with 264 yards passing on seven completions setting a Notre Dame pass yardage record.

Wellsboro quarterback Todd Coolidge completed 15 passes on 27 attempts for 213 yards and one touchdown.

Whitmer to Langan opened the scoring in the first period on a pass play that covered 77 yards. John Lupica added the extra point.

A 20 point Crusader explosion in the second quarter began with a 25 yard touchdown aerial from Whitmer to Drake. The two-point conversion failed and Notre Dame led, 13-0. Notre Dame increased their bulge to 20-0 when Whitmer jammed the ball over from one yard out and Lupica booted the extra point just before intermission. Langan burned the Hornets again, this time a 59 yard pass play.

The kick put Notre Dame on top 27-0. Early in the third stanza. Langan gathered in a 70 yard touchdown strike to up the Crusader edge to 33-0. Later in the period, Coolidge found Jack Maynard on a 37 yard touchdown pass for the Hornets' lone points. Lupica closed out the scoring in the final quarter on a 35 yard run.

Jeff Strohl, Hornet head coach, summed it up this way, "One play (Whitmer to Lankan) hurt us defensively and accounted for 18 of the Notre Dame points. Other than that, I feel we played a good enough game to win. Our offensive line did a very nice job," he added. "They opened holes for (Ken) Gfroerer and Coolidge was not sacked one time."

Maynard caught seven passes for 105 yards and one touchdown. On the season he has 35 receptions for 535 yards. Coolidge improved his season's numbers to 1,194 yards passing and 1,331 yards total offense with one game remaining.

Craig Christman led all Wellsboro tacklers with 12 stops. Gary Cooper added 11 and Nick Lylo had 10. For the season, Lylo has 116 tackles in 9 games, playing outstandingly well from his linebacker slot.

Tony Driebelbies also had a good night, hauling in three passes for 46 yards. Gfroerer was once again top rusher with 73 yards on 17 carries, a 4.3 yards per carry average. He has rushed for a team high 684 yards this season.

The Hornets close their season this Saturday with a Twin Tiers League contest versus Athens at Athens. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
