A 49 yard touchdown pass from Sayre quarterback Bill Buck to Tom Townsend with just over two minutes remaining in the game gave the Redskins a 12-7 football win over host Wellsboro Friday night.

The catch, Townsend's second touchdown reception of the evening, capped a Sayre comeback that negated the Hornets' 7-0 halftime lead. Wellsboro's lone touchdown came in the second period on a 34 yard aerial from quarterback Todd Coolidge to Ken Leisey.

In the third quarter, Townsend was on the receiving end of a 36 yard scoring strike, but a blocked point after kept the Hornets in front, 7-6. In the fourth period, however, on a fourth and long situation, Buck threw the bomb to Townsend. After, a deflection, Townsend made the catch and ran unmolested for his second touchdown of the night.

The Wellsboro defense held Sayre to just 71 yards on the ground. "Our defense played an outstanding game," said head coach Jeff Strohl. "Our main concern was to stop their ground game and forcethem to throw the ball. Actually, only two plays (the touchdown passes) beat us," he continued.

The entire Hornet defense played a "tough, hard-nosed" four periods. Nick Lylo was the leading tackier with 13, but he was ably supported by Stu Wheeler, Mike Metarko, Ken Leisey, and the rest of the "D."

On offense, Ken Gfroerer made several key runs, one of which helped set up the Hornet touchdown. Wellsboro did outgain Sayre 102 yards to 71 in the rushing column. Gfroerer ran for 97 of the 102 yard total. Jack Maynard and Leisey both caught two Coolidge passes to pace the receiving corps.

Wellsboro's next contest is this Friday evening in Waverly. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Hornets are 0-2 on the season. Waverly has yet to play.
