The Towanda Black Knights utilized an effective ball control offense to down the Wellsboro Hornets 34-6 Friday night in the grid opener for both squads. The contest was played at Towanda.
The Black Knights controlled the ball for all but 7:30 of the game, thus denying Wellsboro of any opportunities to mount an offense. Towanda also was not guilty of a turnover throughout the contest.
The Hornets lone tally came on a one yard run by Ken Gfroerer with 7 minutes left in the first half. Gfroerer was Wellsboro's leading rusher with 67 yards on 10 carries.
Towanda ground out 291 yards total offense (229 rushing yards) as compared to 166 total yards for the Hornets. Adding to the Wellsboro woes were two interceptions and a lost fumble.
Craig Dawsey, the rookie Black Knight quarterback, scored three touchdowns, while Dana Bloss, a junior fullback, added the other two scoring runs.
Todd Coolidge, Wellsboro's signal caller, suffered through a 4-for-15 night. Gfroerer and Jack Maynard both caught two passes accounting for the entire 73 yard passing attack.
Nick Lylo led the Hornet defense with 12 tackles.
Towanda scored the first two touchdowns of the game, with Bloss scoring both of them on runs of three and five yards respectively. Gfroerer then scored to cut the Black Knight lead to 13-6. However, Dawsey scored on an 18 yard run before the half to increase Towanda's advantage to 19-6 by intermission.
The second half was all Towanda as Dawsey added two more touchdown runs of four and 26 yards.
