The breaks always even out. The old axiom seems to be coming true for the Wellsboro Green Hornet football team. On Friday night, they scored 14 fourth quarter points, with the aid of two costly Troy turnovers to down the Trojans, 21-20.

To begin the season, the Hornets were plagued by inopportune turnovers, deflected touchdown passes, successful two-point conversion with little or no time left, etc. The result was a disappointing 0-4 start to their season.

A missed extra point by Canton two weeks ago, however, seemed to change Wellsboro's luck. That missed kick gave the Hornets a hard-earned 14-13 win. This Friday night against Troy, Wellsboro found themselves trailing 20-7 entering the fourth period.

This time, however, two Hornet touchdowns and a successful two-point conversion on their part, and the Wellsboro boys win their third consecutive game.

Troy got on the scoreboard first on tailback Mark Ammerman's two yard run in the opening stanza. Scott Weaver's kick put Troy on top 7-0.

A 40 yard touchdown pass from Hornet quarterback Todd Coolidge to Ken Leisey combined with Ken Gfroerer's extra point tied the score early in the second quarter.

The Trojans regained the edge when Ammerman scored the second of his three touchdowns later in the quarter. Fullback Wayne Pratt rumbled 44 yards to get Troy close. Ammerman scampered the final three yards to paydirt. A missed two-point conversion seemed insignificant at the time but loomed larger as the game wore on.

After intermission Troy took a 20-7 lead late in the third period on a 24 yard Mark Wright to Ammerman scoring pass. Weaver once again added the kick. From this point on things began going Wellsboro's way.

A bad snap on a punt gave the Hornets the ball deep in Troy territory in the fourth quarter. Four plays later, Coolidge once again found Leisey, this time on a 17 yard touchdown aerial. The Hornets gambled for two, came up short, and trailed 20-13.

Later in the period Matt Mitchell recovered a Troy fumble on the Trojans' 41-yard line. Ken Gfroerer scooted three yards for a touchdown four plays later to cut Troy's lead to one, 20-19, with just over three minutes left. This time the Hornets gambled and won. Coolidge rolled out right and hit Jack Maynard with a pass for two points and a 21-20 win.

"Our defense kept us in the game by causing four turnovers," said head coach Jeff Strohl. "When we needed to make the big play, it was the defense that made them."

Nick Lylo led Wellsboro's defensive unit with 12 tackles. Maynard and Leisey each hauled in three Coolidge passes. Leisey's good for 84 yards and two touchdowns.

Coolidge ended the evening with 8 completions on 19 attempts for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Gfroerer was the top Hornet rusher with 66 yards on 13 attempts. Wellsboro is now 3-4 overall, 2-4 in Twin Tier League play. Troy is 4-2 overall, 2-2 in the league.

The Hornets entertain 0-7 North Penn this Friday evening in a non-league tilt . Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. with Parents' Night festivities to get underway at 7:30.
