Incomplete passes. Turnovers. Penalties. They all kill drives. And on Friday night they all led to Wellsboro's downfall as Waverly beat the visiting Green Hornets, 26-9. The loss drops Wellsboro's season record to 0-3.
Jeff Strohl, the Hornets head coach, commented, "I thought the offensive line did a good job on pass protection but incomplete and dropped passes hurt," he added. "Fumbles and penalties really stalled our second half drives too. Every time we gained a first down it seemed it was called back and we were put into third and long situations."
The Hornets lone touchdown came on a pass from quarterback Todd Coolidge to Jack Maynard. The other Hornet score came on a safety recorded by Nick Lylo. Ken Gfroerer was Wellsboro's top rusher. He gained 61 yards on 15 attempts. Maynard caught 5 passes good for 71 yards and Lylo was the leading tackler with 13 stops.
The Hornets total offense amounted to 138 yards, 71 in the air and 67 via the rush. However, three turnovers, an interception, and two fumbles ended several scoring threats. In addition, Wellsboro was penalized eight times for 75 yards.
This Friday evening the Hornets host Wyalusing. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
