The Wellsboro Hornet football team has yet to win a game this season, and Wyalusing, their opponents last Friday night, have yet to lose. However, both streaks would have been ended had it not been for a successful two-point conversion late in the first half.

That extra point turned a 13-12 Hornet lead into a 14-13 Wyalusing edge. The game, played at Wellsboro, was the Hornets "best offensive performance of the year," according to Wellsboro head coach Jeff Strohl. Indeed, it was. Wyalusing had yet to be scored on in three previous outings. "Everything came together offensively for the first time this season," continued Strohl.

Todd Coolidge, Wellsboro's quarterback, hit on 9-of-18 throws for 176 yards and no interceptions. Jack Maynard caught five of the nine for 105 yards. Leading rusher for the Hornets was Ken Gfroerer who churned out 80 yards on 19 attempts.

"The defensive linebackers played well too," Strohl said. "They stopped an offense that was averaging over 20 points a game."

Nick Lylo once again led all Hornet tacklers with a total of 16. Wellsboro struck first, midway through the first stanza when Coolidge threw a 32 yard scoring strike to Ken Leisey. Gfroerer's kick was good and Wellsboro led 7-0.

Wyalusing turned a Hornet miscue into 6 points early in the second quarter. A bad punt snap gave Wyalusing a first down at Wellsboro's five-yard line. One play later, Ray Oswald scored the first of his two touchdown runs of the night. The extra point was missed.

Midway through the second period, Gfroerer capped a 78 yard Hornet drive with a seven yard scoring drive. The drive was kept alive twice by Coolidge to Maynard aerials. This time the extra point missed.

Ram quarterback Fred Storey threw a 58 yard pass to Wayne Bennett with under one minute left in the first half to once again put the ball at the Hornets' five-yard line. On the next play, Oswald scored again. Storey then hit Brian Jennings with the game winning two-point conversion pass.

The entire second half was scoreless, dominated by both defensive units.

Wellsboro hosts Cowanesque Valley this Friday evening. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
